After a long hiatus, lead vocalist Isaac Slade departed the band in 2022. This left the remaining members at a crossroads, but they chose to carry on. The Fray, now consisting of Joe King (guitar, lead vocals), Dave Welsh (guitar), and Ben Wysocki (drums), decided to forge a new path forward.
The band members, Isaac Slade (lead vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, backing vocals), Michael Lewis (drums), and Dan Wilson (bass), reunited in 2018 to start working on new music. They collaborated with producer Dave Eggers, who helped them craft a distinctive sound that blends their classic style with modern elements. The EP's four tracks, "The Fray Is Back", "Changeling", "Shame", and "No Light", were recorded in a Los Angeles studio, where the band members poured their hearts and souls into the music.
