The first assassination attempt fails disastrously, forcing the group to flee. The film then leaps forward to 1941 in Shanghai, where the resistance network seeks out a now-weary Wong to resume her role. This time, she succeeds in becoming Mr. Yee's mistress. However, the line between performance and reality begins to blur. As their torrid, often violent, affair progresses, Wong finds herself torn between her patriotic duty to kill the man and a powerful, unexpected empathy and lust for the very monster she is supposed to destroy.
